Sestriere Skiing Day or Night

Constructed in the 1930s, some 11 miles from Italy's French border, this high-altitude resort really stands out from the crowd. Given it was chosen to host the 2006 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympics, it's unsurprising that it boasts some of the world's best skiing facilities, including 146 pistes and numerous artificial runs covering a total of 400km, with something to suit skiers and boarders of all abilities.

However, it's the option to ski day or night on a floodlit piste that gives Sestriere its edge, making it a real magnet for thrill seekers throughout the season. Even if you happen to visit outside of peak season you're sure to find something exhilarating to do – in fact, the region has become a magnet for mountain bikers keen to sample the snowless slopes, while the resort boasts Europe's highest 18-hole golf course.

Après Ski Options at Sestriere

Of course, there's no better way to kick back after an energetic day on the slopes than by enjoying a little Apres ski. This cosmopolitan resort caters to all tastes, whether you want to enjoy a slap-up meal or relax with a drink or two. The main street through the town is home to numerous bars and restaurants, ranging from pizza joints to gourmet outlets. Meanwhile, party animals can enjoy a tipple or two at the local Irish-themed bar, dance the night away at the disco or even enjoy a spot of karaoke.

With so many challenging trails to tackle and so much to do when the sun goes down - including  heading back to the slopes - your biggest challenge will be packing it all in during a Sestriere ski break.
