Leading regional airline to fly for the first time on Christmas Day and will operate over 3.6 thousand flights over upcoming holiday period offering convenient regional travel options for those facing rail and road chaos.

21st December 2015

Given the extensive and widely publicised planned rail shutdowns that will not only severely impact travel across the UK but also add to the usual chaos on gridlocked roads over the upcoming holiday period, Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline is gearing up for a particularly busy time as people seek alternative ways to quickly and conveniently travel to their destination.

December 25th will also mark another important milestone for the airline when it operates for the first time on Christmas Day, with 12 flights in total from Birmingham and Manchester to Amsterdam and Paris Charles de Gaulle to meet public demand for these two popular European routes.

Driving additional demand for the airline’s regional routes to London in particular, would appear to be the additional suspension of regular train links serving both Heathrow and Gatwick airports for various periods of time between Christmas and New Year.  Regional customers instead are seeking alternative options of travelling via Flybe’s London City services from Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh and Exeter or direct into London Gatwick from Cornwall Airport Newquay to ensure making their longer haul connections.

In total, Flybe will operate 3,647 flights over the 14-day holiday period between 21st December 2015 and 3rd January, 2016, with today  (Monday 21st December) set to be its busiest operational day with 372 flights in total taking off from 35airports.
With customers heading off to start their Christmas and New Year festivities, Flybe’s busiest airport will be Birmingham, where – measured by the number of daily aircraft movements - it is also the largest scheduled airline, followed by closely by Belfast City, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Southampton airports. Many passengers are taking advantage of the convenience of having a wide choice of affordable regional flights from their doorsteps with Flybe, to then travel seamlessly on to long haul destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Hong Kong and Orlando with one of the airline’s eight codeshare partners from Birmingham and Manchester airports.

Vincent Hodder, Flybe’s Chief Revenue Officer comments: “Without a doubt flying faster from A to B with Flybe throughout the UK will be proved an even more viable option than usual this Christmas given the widespread rail disruption and uncomfortable travel congestion.

“We look forward to welcoming all our passengers on board at this special time of the year, especially those who are maybe flying with us for the first time.  With those needing to be on the move throughout the extended holiday period, we are also pleased to offer for the first time a selected number of flights on Christmas Day.  There is no let up at this time of the year for our operations’ teams and crew and travel after Boxing Day and prior to the New Year will certainly continue to keep us all on our toes.”
