Leading regional airline operating expanded choice of routes from Wales’ national airport including six that are brand new

01 JUNE 2015

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has today (June 1st 2015) opened its second base in less than a month, this time at Cardiff Airport, with passengers boarding inaugural flights to Edinburgh, Paris and Dublin as part of its extended route network that includes brand new routes to Cork, Duesseldorf, Faro, Glasgow, Munich, and Milan.

The first of the two 118-seat Embraer 195 aircraft to be based at the airport jetted into Cardiff today to begin operations. On arrival, it was greeted by the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, First Minster of Wales  and Flybe CEO, Saad Hammad who marked the occasion by naming it – ‘Yn Falch o Wasanaethu Cymru ….Proudly serving Wales’.   The second aircraft will enter into service on 1st September, 2015.

Having two 118-seat Embraer jet aircraft based at Wales’ national airport enables the airline to improve frequency and capacity on its existing routes to Belfast City, Dusseldorf, Jersey and later in the year, on its 2015-16 Winter service to Geneva.

The 10-year agreement secured with Cardiff Airport creates an additional half-million extra seats for sale each year, supporting 50 new jobs that includes flight crew. Last month, Flybe opened another new two-aircraft base at Bournemouth with Bombardier Q400, again creating new job opportunities including additional customer services, security and ground handling staff to support the nine new routes operating out of the South Coast airport.

Flybe CEO, Saad Hammad, said: "The opening of our new Cardiff base today is a proud moment for us and marks yet another important milestone for Flybe. It enhances and extends our already established presence here at the national airport for Wales.  We are very pleased to have the opportunity to grow and expand further the choice of routes available to those choosing to fly from Cardiff.  It gives customers the faster, convenient and more affordable option for flying direct to and from Wales, which is far preferable than having to drive for hours to farther flung airports in England. Having such choices to travel to and from local regional airports is something we at Flybe consider a necessity, not a luxury.

“We look forward to all the 11 routes we are offering this summer being supported by many new customers, and we look forward to welcoming them on board in the coming months.“

Debra Barber, Managing Director at Cardiff Airport, added: "Our partnership with Flybe gives the people of Wales and beyond more choice in routes, more frequent services and great value flights, as well as creating opportunities for more visitors to come to Wales.

“We have undergone a significant period of investment over the last few years to offer customers a better flying experience than ever before – and now we are thrilled to start flying to a range of new destinations too.

“The fact that Flybe will base two of its Embraer 195 aircraft here is testament to its commitment to Cardiff, and we are delighted to see 50 new jobs also created as a result of the partnership.”

Flybe’s 2015 Summer schedule to and from Cardiff Airport features 11 routes in total namely to Belfast City, Cork, Dublin, Duesseldorf, Edinburgh, Faro, Glasgow, Jersey, Milan, Munich and Paris Charles de Gaulle. One way fares are from £24.99 including taxes and charges available for booking at
