FLYBE TO RE-OPEN ABERDEEN BASE
12 NOVEMBER 2014
Up to 100 direct jobs to be created – four Bombardier Q400 to be based at Aberdeen
Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has today announced it is to re-open its base at Aberdeen Airport effective from the start of next year’s Summer season on 29th March 2015. This will result in the creation of up to 100 direct jobs including flight crew, engineers and ground handling staff.
Four 78-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft will be based at the airport to service and meet demand for key routes to and from Aberdeen that include those to London City, Manchester and Flybe Shuttle.
The news of the base re-opening comes on the back of Flybe last month starting double-daily flights to and from London City Airport, and its innovative three times a day Flybe Shuttle service to Jersey via Leeds Bradford and Southampton. Passengers are also increasingly using the airline’s multi-frequency flights to its Manchester hub in order to by-pass congested London airports and seamlessly connect onwards to Dubai, Helsinki and even further afield through its codeshare partners, Etihad and Finnair.
Paul Simmons, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “I am pleased to report that the success of the actions we were forced to take to return the airline to profitability and stimulate demand has brought us to the point where it now makes commercial sense to re-open our Aberdeen base. It is a testament to a year of recovery, turnaround and the ultimate re-birth of our airline.
“I would like to thank both the Scottish government and the airport’s management team for welcoming a Flybe-based operation back to Aberdeen.”
Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister, added:
“Flybe’s new base and the new jobs it will bring is a great result for Aberdeen and for Scotland. Improving Scotland’s connectivity is one of our top priorities, as it will help build strong business links and provide a real boost to our tourism industry. I am sure that today’s announcement will lead to more new services from Aberdeen and the Scottish Government stands ready to assist.
“I recently experienced for myself the airline’s new London City service from Aberdeen in conjunction with the services to Inverness and Edinburgh and coupled with the recent announcement to open up access to destinations across the Atlantic, I am delighted that Flybe are enhancing options for Scotland’s passengers.”
Carol Benzie, Managing Director of Aberdeen Airport, said:
“We are delighted with the news that Flybe plan to re-establish a base in Aberdeen and look forward to welcoming them back to the airport. The ever increasing demand by passengers travelling to and from Aberdeen has driven our strategy to expand our terminal and airfield capacity in the coming years, and we believe that Flybe passengers will benefit from these significant improvements."
Flybe’s 2014-15 Winter schedule features seven routes from Aberdeen that includes those to Leeds Bradford, Southampton and Jersey as part of its innovative ‘hop on-hop off’ Flybe Shuttle, together offering a total choice of up to 200 flights a week. One way fares are from £34.99 including taxes and charges.
