New direct flights to London from Groningen announced

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, announced today that it will offer direct daily return flights between Groningen and London Southend Airport from 5 June, 2014, operated by its franchise partner, Stobart Air.

Customers will have the choice of six return flights a week (see full schedule below). One way fares are from €39.99 including taxes and charges, and are available now for booking at

Flybe aims to carry up to 83,000 passengers on its Groningen-London Southend service within three years, starting with 20,000 passengers in year one.

London Southend is London’s newest airport and was recently recognised by consumers as the best airport in the United Kingdom. It is only 53 minutes by train to Liverpool Street Station in the centre of London, and 40 minutes by rail to Stratford Station which connects to London City’s financial district.

The airport’s new terminal is less than 100 paces from a brand new rail station, with up to eight rail services every hour. Passengers with hand luggage can travel from plane to train in just 15 minutes. Security checks at the airport take a maximum of four minutes.

Speaking today at a press conference in Groningen Airport to announce the new route, Mr Peter O’Mara, Commercial and Operations Development Manager at Stobart Air, said that London Southend Airport represents an easy, accessible and value for money choice.

‘We are delighted to announce our new Groningen to London Southend service. It means business and leisure passengers from the Groningen region now have a convenient and efficient connection to London. 

‘From a tourism and job creation perspective, it positions Groningen to attract more visitors and investors to the region, with almost 20 million people living within two hours of London Southend Airport.
