Flybe's Redhead flight receives 'royal' seal of approval
30 August 2013
Europe's largest regional airline attracts high profile attention as special redhead flight takes to the skies.
Today, a flame-haired royal imposter in the guise of globally recognised redhead, Prince Harry, along with scores of other red haired passengers, received a rousing send-off aboard Flybe’s sold-out Inverness to Amsterdam flight.
Roddy Walker, a Prince Harry look-a-like, delighted awaiting passengers as he mingled with them prior to the departure of the designated redhead flight to celebrate Scotland being the country with the largest percentage of redheads in the world at the start of the Redhead Days Festival in Breda this weekend. ‘Prince Harry’ and his fellow passengers were waved off by a number of specially invited guests including Mrs Margaret Swan, a local 95 year-old Inverness resident who is arguably the oldest natural redhead in Scotland, and Caroline England who played a rendition of her ‘Proud to be Ginger’ song.
Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, is hoping this will create an unofficial world record for the largest number of redheads flown on a scheduled flight and which also includes the pilots and cabin crew. On-board refreshments were also appropriately themed with alcoholic ginger beer courtesy of Ginger Grouse.
The flight has attracted significant media interest from both sides of the North Sea. Simon Lilley, Flybe’s Director of Marketing, says that the flight received an extremely enthusiastic response both from Flybe’s crew and from the many people who have already booked the flight. “This is a fun initiative and we hope that everyone enjoys being a part of what we hope will create a little bit of aviation history.”
Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, added: “As a fellow redhead, I was delighted to hear of this eye-catching world record attempt. After all, Scotland has the highest proportion of redheads in the world – something recently celebrated with the character of Merida in Disney-Pixar’s Brave – and it is one of the many things that makes our country unique. This innovative Flybe promotion will help to promote the Highlands’ international connections to Europe.”
Gaeron Kayley, Captain of Flybe’s redhead flight commented:“I’ve always been proud of my natural red hair so it’s a real honour for me to pilot this special flight from Inverness to Amsterdam. The rest of the crew are redheads too and we are all really looking forward to welcoming many others on board as passengers. We hope everyone will enjoy the experience!”
