Getting to Manchester city centre by public transport
Manchester Airport has excellent public transport links via bus, train, tram, and coach, not only to the city centre and Greater Manchester area, but to the rest of the UK too. When you arrive at Manchester Airport, follow the signs and Skylink moving walkway to The Station, the airport's public transport hub where you'll find Manchester Airport's dedicated train and bus station.
Manchester Airport is well served by a network of local and regional buses, running daily from early morning to late at night, including weekends and bank holidays.
Several bus services connect Manchester Airport to the city centre, including a frequent, direct 24-hour bus service. The journey takes around 45 minutes in normal traffic, but you should allow longer at peak times. Fewer bus services run at night and over weekends, so please check bus timetables on the Transport for Greater Manchester website to plan your journey.
Manchester Airport benefits from its very own train station, with local, regional and national services, including a round-the-clock direct train service between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly station in the city centre. The journey time is around 20 minutes. Several trains run every hour during the day on this service, with less frequency at night and weekends. Please check the timetable before you travel.
Metrolink trams run from Manchester Airport to Cornbrook, just one stop from the city centre. Several trams run every hour from Monday to Saturday, with less frequent services on Sundays and public holidays. For tram times visit the Metrolink Airport page. Tickets are available from machines on tram stop platforms, but not on-board trams, so don't forget to buy your tickets before you travel.
National Express coach services depart from Manchester Airport’s dedicated station, with destinations in the Greater Manchester area and other UK cities. You can buy coach tickets for travel when you arrive at Manchester Airport, but for the best prices and availability, we recommend booking in advance.
Getting to Manchester city centre by car
Manchester city centre is well signposted from the airport, and driving into the city takes around 25 minutes in normal traffic. The airport is just off the M56 motorway which links directly to the M60, Manchester’s ring road.
Car hire at Manchester Airport
A number of major car hire companies operate from Manchester Airport, including Avis and Budget, Flybe's car hire partners. We recommend booking your hire car in advance for the best price, and to ensure a speedy departure from the terminal after your flight to Manchester.
Booking car hire with Avis and Budget is easy - simply add on a car hire option when booking your Flybe flights. The car hire depot is located just outside Manchester Airport and can be easily reached using the free shuttle buses that run approximately every 10 minutes from each airport terminal.
Black cab services run from outside each of the airport's three terminals, with plenty of cars always available. You can also book a local private hire taxi, and you're likely to be charged a flat rate of between £20 to £30 for travel between Manchester Airport and the city centre.
