Not to miss when on the hunt for the Old Dutch Masters is Amsterdam, with its famous Museum Square that is home to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. The capital city is a cultural and historical hotspot that has plenty to offer its visitors. However, if it is a quieter city break that you are after The Hague is the place to be! Internationally known as the city of peace and justice, or the city by the sea, The Hague is only a short journey away from the capital. With its royal allure and prestigious buildings that house impressive art collections, like the Mauritshuis, The Hague is a must-see destination.

Explore Traditional Holland

A country of many icons, Holland is the perfect example of a modern society that cherishes its traditions. Rotterdam demonstrates this contrast particularly well; the innovative city is a source of all things design but is only a stone’s throw away from the UNESCO World Heritage site Kinderdijk. The nineteen iconic windmills of Kinderdijk have been an essential part of a large water management system to prevent floods. Another famous Dutch icon is the Gouda cheese, named after the small city of Gouda where the cheese was first made. Today, nearly 60% of all Dutch cheese is produced in the region surrounding Gouda. With Rotterdam and The Hague at half an hour distance, this makes the perfect day trip for cheese connoisseurs.

Discover Dutch Design

The contrast between old and new is not only visible in Rotterdam, although it is a great place to start your journey. Dutch Design has made its way onto the international radar, from innovative architecture to fashion and art. For stunning futuristic architecture head to the Markhal in Rotterdam, and grab something to eat while doing so! The vibrant colours and the structure of the building make for a perfect year-round indoor meeting point. A bit further down south is the Dutch Design District with Eindhoven at its heart. Explore the many design studios and follow the traces of De Stijl Movement, inspired by the famous Mondrian. In 2017, Holland celebrates 100 years of De Stijl. Don’t miss out on the many events and celebrations taking place this year!

Indulge in the flavours of Holland

Dutch cuisine includes more than just cheese and stroopwafels, although those are both indeed very delicious. The vicinity of the North Sea coast is the gateway to fresh fish, head to fishing towns like Scheveningen or Volendam and taste the salty flavours. Or head to the stunning Gelderland region, surrounded by picturesque nature of De Veluwe. Here, you will be treated to local produce, wild meat and many Michelin-starred restaurants for an unforgettable dining experience.
