Hamburg’s distinctive maritime flavour is evident wherever you go and there are countless ways to immerse yourself in its watery past and present. Go back in time as you stroll along the canals of the historic Speicherstadt area, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Packed with bars, restaurants and new cultural attractions – including the spectacular Elbphilharmonie concert hall – you’ll find cutting-edge architecture and a buzzing atmosphere. Hamburg is also famous for its green spaces. Wander through the parkland or hire a pedal boat at Lake Alster, right in the heart of the city. Whether your flight to Hamburg is for business or leisure, you’ll find a city that perfectly balances its fascinating past with its glittering present-day.
Restaurants and nightlife in Hamburg
An early morning trip to the legendary Fischmarkt (fish market) is a must. Open only on Sundays from 5am to 9.30am, visitors are treated to the spectacle of rowdy traders selling their wares and revellers attempting to shake of the excesses of the night with fresh fish burgers. Later on, locals and families join the throng for breakfast. For dining at a more civilised hour, Anna Sgroi on Milchstrasse takes Italian cuisine to another level. Mö-Grill on Mönckebergstrasse is the locals’ favourite for traditional German currywurst. And for delicious baked goods and coffee, head to Mikkels on Kleine Rainstrasse. Live music is a big deal here and the Kaiserkeller is worth a look. It also happens to be one of Hamburg’s best-known nightclubs, having nurtured The Beatles’ talent in their early days.
