Overview of Rodez

Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of Rodez. The capital of the UNESCO Heritage area of Aveyron is hard to reach by road or rail, and was until recently one of the most isolated small cities in France. So, if you want to be certain not to bump into your boss on your flight to the south of France, Rodez is well off the beaten-track. Rich with history and culture, Rodez birthed some of France’s finest creations, from its greatest living artist Pierre Soulages, to the world-famous Roquefort cheese.

Restaurants and nightlife

If you’re on a budget, head to Aubrac Burger for tasty fast fare, or La Table Ruthenoise for their reasonable set menus. For a more elegant setting head to Café Bras, established by Aveyronnais star Michel Bras, whIch serves traditional French cuisine in the heart of the Musée Soulages.

Shopping

The open-air markets of Place du Bourg and Place du Sacré Coeur are a bargain-hunter’s delight. The winding alleyways of the city centre are a warren of indie boutiques just waiting to be explored. A visit to the Maison du Livre is a must for bookworms, while for those with a sweet tooth Chocolaterie Agnès Et Pierre is a day trip to heaven itself.

Events in Rodez

Saint-Céré Festival (July/August): Arts festival showcasing new work from over 150 artists.

Grand Falconer’s Festival: This extravagantly bonkers festival must be seen to be believed. Every July, The Grand Falconer’s Medieval Festival brings back the Middle Ages, with knights, fair ladies, musicians, and peasants leading torch-lit processions by day and night, plays, concerts, balls, fire shows, and children’s games and activities. Only in France…

New Beaujolais festival: A must for wine-lovers, this annual festival is traditionally launched in Beaujeu with a procession of barrels filled with flaming vine shoots, before they’re drilled into as the clock strikes midnight to release their delicious contents.

Attractions around Rodez

The historic heart of Rodez is a winding network of narrow streets and public squares. The city is remarkably well-preserved, thanks to the perimeter of the old Roman and medieval city walls.

You don’t have to go to Paris to see the Notre Dame - Rodez has its own version which was completed in the early 16th century.

In Roquefort, visitors can descend into the underground caves where the cheese is matured and stored.

Museum lovers are well catered-for too – the Fenille presents archaeology, art and history from over the last 300,000 years, and the Musée Soulages features over 500 works and documents from France’s greatest living artist, Pierre Soulages. There’s also the Musée Denys Puech, which was founded by the sculptor in 1903.
