Flybe is proud of our multi-billion dollar investment in new aircraft in recent years that has modernised our operations and will give us one of the youngest fleets in the industry.
Our aircraft use the very latest, state of the art technology to burn fuel more efficiently, to emit less carbon and, crucially for the local communities in which we operate, keep noise to an absolute minimum.
In a groundbreaking, industry-first move, Flybe started producing an eco-label for its aircraft in June 2007. The label, modelled on those used in the sale of white goods like fridges, microwaves and washing machines, shows a full range of environmental indicators per aircraft.
The labels are presented in a clear and transparent way as part of the on-line ticket booking process and we also display them on our aircraft as well as in our onboard literature and advertising. The labels have been subjected to an assurance process by Deloitte & Touche LLP, a leading professional services firm and represent best in class methodology and we expect the rest of the industry to follow suit.
Aircraft impact upon the environment in two key areas; locally to airports and over the course of a journey. Our ecolabels are designed to measure both elements. Under Local Environment, the following categories are covered:
Noise during the landing and take off (LTO) cycle
All aircraft make noise as they take off and land but technology can lessen the impact. The LTO cycle is defined by the International Civil Aviation Organisation as all activities near the airport that take place below the altitude of 3000 feet (1000 m), including taxi-in and out, take-off, climb-out and approach-landing. Because Flybe's aircraft are state of the art, our noise levels are among the best in the industry.
Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) is the generic term for the various nitrogen oxides produced during combustion. Again, the application of the very latest technology has allowed aircraft manufacturers to greatly reduce the amount of NOX on landing and take-off and Flybe’s aircraft compare favourably to others in the market.
The eco-labels are designed to allow passengers to see exactly what impact their trip is having on the environment during the full journey.
To assist comparison, our eco-labels divide Flybe routes into three categories; Internal - 0 to 500 km. Near EU - 501 to 1500 km. Short Haul - 1500 km and above. This enables us to apply independently verified calculations to measure aircraft emissions such as:
The United Kingdom’s total contribution to global CO2 emissions is 2%. Of the UK total, aviation accounts for 6% (road transport’s is some 24%). UK aviation’s share of global CO2 is therefore 0.1% and UK domestic flights account for 0.01% of global CO2. Despite these small figures, Flybe is committed to drive down CO2 emissions and, as is shown by the figures on the eco-labels, is succeeding in doing so.

Because Flybe aircraft are some of the most modern in the industry, we burn less fuel than the traditional legacy carriers. This not only allows us to keep costs down but also limit our emissions per seat.
