Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline’s received an overwhelming amount of public support for its latest campaign to highlight the unfairness of Air Passenger Duty. The airline received a surge in ticket sales on the back of its pledge to give passengers an equivalent ‘tax rebate’ across 116 routes effective for travel between 27th October 2013 and 25th October 2014. It also received over 2,000 customer signatures in just three days for its petition to the Chancellor of the Exchequer calling upon him to introduce a fair deal for UK domestic aviation.
In addition, Flybe saw a spike in social media engagement during this time, as customer messages poured in backing the campaign to raise public awareness of the punitive Air Passenger Duty departure tax. Key media also supported the cause, with leading travel writer and journalist Simon Calder commenting how ‘Flybe is one of the biggest victims of Air Passenger Duty’.
