On 3rd and 4th September 2011, the most talented young tennis players across Devon and Cornwall, came together at the Ivybridge Tennis Academy and battled it out in this year’s Flybe Summer Mini Masters Final.
The competition saw the top eight players in each of the three age groups (Under 8, Under 9 and Under 10) go head to head on the courts to win the coveted Flybe Mini Masters title and prize consisting of flights for a family of four to any Flybe destination in Europe. Winners and the runners-up also won a Tennis Masterclass with Lucie Ahl, England’s former Number 1 Women’s player.

This year’s highlights from the Red category include Louis Davey, fending off the number 1 and 2 seed to become this year’s champion. The competition was also fierce in this year’s Orange category too as Taylor Ingham Hill fought off Daniel Hocking in a tough three set battle to take the title, however Taylor’s skills just pipped Daniel’s to take top spot. It was tense in the Green category, as eventual winner Freddie Stone was nearly knocked out in the semi-final by Agatha Evans.
The Final marks the end of another successful summer season for the Devon and Cornwall LTA who have seen first hand how inspiring and effective the Flybe Mini Mastersprogramme has been since it began three years ago. More grassroots players are participating in and enjoying competitive tennis across the region than ever before thanks to the Flybe Mini Masters series and support from the LTA.
Flybe’s Director of Marketing, Simon Lilley comments: “We couldn’t be more pleased for this year’s winners who put so much effort into securing the Flybe Mini Masters title. We have had an exceptional season and the standard at which these young players are competing is fantastic. We are extremely proud to have been involved in the Mini Masters programme over the past three years, and have enjoyed working with the local tennis associations to develop the junior tennis circuit in Devon and Cornwall.
We can’t wait to see how the players have progressed by the next competition which kicks off this winter, with the Devon starting September 24th and Cornwall September 10th.”
England’s former Number 1 Women’s player, Lucie Ahl comments: “Once again, I'm delighted to be involved with the Flybe Mini Masters series. It gives so many more players the opportunity to not only play and compete here in Devon and Cornwall but also have the added challenge of striving to qualify for the Masters’ Finals. This year’s competition was fierce and it was an honour to have presented the winner’s their trophies. The Mini Masters has helped encourage so many more kids to play tennis and it’s evident to see the benefits as standards continue to improve each season.”
