Leading regional airline welcomes much-loved writer Rosamunde Pilcher on board for the first ever flight from Germanys Rhine Ruhr region to the South West of England
Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, will on Saturday celebrate the first-ever flight of its new weekly summer service between Exeter and Düsseldorf with a ‘special passenger’ appearance of much-loved author, Rosamunde Pilcher who also graciously made a personal announcement to welcome the first passengers on board during the flight.
Ms Pilcher has an enormous following in Germany following the extensive TV serialisation of her South West England-themed novels and thousands of her fans travel to the region each year to visit the story-line locations.
Excited passengers will have the opportunity to have their photographs taken with a life-size cut-out of the celebrated author during their Düsseldorf check-in and be presented with unique Rosamunde Pilcher masks! The ‘special passenger’ (a life-size cut-out of the author) will then accompany them on the flight to Exeter where, on arrival, they will be welcomed by representatives of Exeter International Airport and the CEO of VisitCornwall, Malcolm Bell.
During her onboard public announcement in support of the route and in welcoming the first passengers on board, Ms Pilcher – whose family members regularly use Flybe’s services between the West Country and Edinburgh, said: “Although I can’t be with you in person, I’m absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you on board. I sincerely hope you will enjoy your visit and that you will return many times to this very special part of our country that I know and love so well …and that been so inspirational to me in my writing.”
Mike Rutter, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer comments: “This service opens up an exciting new route for the first time and, with the added attraction of the very tangible link to Rosamunde Pilcher and her novels, will allow her many thousands of fans to conveniently and affordably visit the West Country this summer. We were thrilled when Ms Pilcher agreed to support today’s inaugural flight between Düsseldorf and Exeter by giving so generously and enthusiastically of her time and I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’.”
Exeter International Airport's Finance Director Matt Roach said: “We are delighted that Flybe is introducing this first ever direct service from Exeter into Germany and its Saturday departure will suit many travellers. The route will also be beneficial to inbound tourism. I’m sure that the Dusseldorf link will prove to be very successful and it should generate significant revenue for the local economy.”
