The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) service is an overground train system that connects East London to the London Underground network. The airport has its own DLR station connected to the terminal, with trains departing every 8 to 15 minutes. If you are travelling out of London, the closest National Rail stations include Waterloo, London Bridge and Stratford International. All of these can be reached via the Jubilee line from Canning Town, a 7 minute DLR journey from the airport. A free shuttle bus, number 573, operates in a one way loop from London City Airport via Albert Road, Woolwich Free Ferry and Woolwich Manor Way, then non-stop to the Price Regent DLR station, then returning to the airport. For night-time services, passengers are advised to use a taxi service.

Arriva operate frequent bus services to and from the airport including the 7, 8 and 9 services which stop directly outside the airport. First Group also provide coach services – the x30 operates between Southend and Stansted Airport, stopping at Southend Airport and Chelmsford along the way. There is a bus and coach station situated directly opposite the terminal entrance, where you can catch local buses. You can also purchase coach tickets for National Express services from the ticket desk at arrivals for coaches to parts of London and other UK destinations. The airport's train station is also easily accessible and is located directly below the terminal building. The Stansted Express runs London-bound trains every 15 minutes and travellers can also get on CrossCountry Trains heading towards the Midlands where you can catch further connections to the North.

There are short stay and long stay car parks at London Gatwick Airport. The long stay car park at the South Terminal is within walking distance of the airport, while a free shuttle bus will take you to the terminal building from the North Terminal long stay car park. The London Underground service does not run to London Gatwick but the airport is served by a railway station, from which regular express trains depart to central London. Trains run every 15 minutes and the journey to London Victoria, from where the rest of the city is easily accessible by tube, takes around 30 minutes. It is also possible to get trains from the airport to other locations, such as St Pancras International, Southampton, Portsmouth, Brighton and Reading. There are also buses available from both terminals. These local services run between London Gatwick and nearby towns such as Crawley, Horley, Redhill and Horsham.
Taxis are available from London Gatwick Airport and it is possible to pre-book. However, taxis in London are expensive and a typical journey into the centre of the city will cost around £95, plus an £8 congestion charge if your journey takes you within the charging zone.
It is possible to hire a car at the airport upon arrival. It is not necessary but you may wish to book in advance to secure your desired vehicle and the best possible deal. A number of car hire companies operate from the airport. Their offices are located on level 1 of the North Terminal.
