A climb to the top of the north tower of St. Pierre's Cathedral will provide you with one of the most extensive views of the city and lake. The cathedral itself is also a sight to behold, and amalgamates a number of architectural styles, resulting in its bold exterior and astonishingly intricate designs on the interior including a 15th century fresco. Thanks to its location at the foot of the Alps, the city is also the perfect place to start a skiing or adventure holiday, with Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc, just a short drive away. Whether you're planning a relaxing weekend getaway or a longer alpine break, our travel guide below will tell you all you need to know about the city and surrounding region.
Despite its relatively small size, Geneva is not short of great places to eat. Whether you're looking for a traditional Swiss experience or a slightly more budget-busting affair, you won't have to look far. As a nation famed for their cheese, you shouldn't miss the chance to sample some of the city's famous fondue. Some of the best can be found at the Restaurant La Barillette, where you can enjoy the delicacy over unbeatable views of Geneva and its lake, as long as you make a booking at least a day in advance. The area around the train station is also great for food, with a host of restaurants offering cuisine from all over the globe.
Geneva may be a city steeped in history and full of culture, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy some world class shopping. The area around La Rue du Marché in the City Centre is ideal for souvenirs including world famous Swiss watches and chocolate. If it's something a little more unique you're after, the Old Town won't disappoint. Its winding alleys and streets provide something new at every turn, with a host of antique shops and museums that are sure to entice any traveller.
A must see thanks to its prominence throughout the city is the Jet d'Eau. One of the largest fountains in the world, this 140 metre high attraction pumps out over 500 litres of water a second and has become an icon of Geneva. No complete without a trip to the nearby mountain range. The intimidating Mont-Saleve is easily reachable by cable car, reaching 1,100 metres in less than five minutes. Climbing, mountain-biking and even paragliding are just some of the sports available at the mountain - not that you'll be paying much attention to what you're doing once you've been mesmerised by the beautiful view from the top.
