Set in the Mediterranean Sea next to the Italian island of Sardinia, Corsica's vibe is very different to that of mainland France. Broadly, Corsica is split north and south into two ‘departments’, Corse-Du-Sud and Haute Corse. Figari Airport serves the south, while Bastia Airport serves the north of the island.
With a stunning landscape and warm weather, the summer months make for an ideal time to visit. Lovers of nature won't be disappointed, with miles of beautiful beaches and rugged inland mountains waiting to be explored. Adrenaline seekers are also catered for in the form of water sports and hiking – and most notably the GR20, one of Europe’s most notable hiking trails.
Formerly Italian, Corsica was conquered by France in 1755 and much of the island retains an Italian flavour. All of this, plus Corsica’s reputation for fabulous food and hospitality, marks it out as a dream holiday island.
Nightlife in Corsica tends to focus on dining at one of the many restaurants or cafés which can be found in the island’s towns and resorts. With a Mediterranean climate and a close proximity to the island of Sardinia, it comes as no surprise that the blend of French and Italian cuisine on offer makes for a foodie's paradise.
For dining with a view, whatever the weather, head to Le Cosi on Bastia’s seafront and enjoy a Mediterranean meal under the stone arches or try Grazie Mille for top notch Italian cuisine. Ajaccio, the island’s capital, is just over a two-hour drive from Figari Airport. Here, the views from Calvi Marina are spectacular, and piano bar Chez Tao in the citadel is great for celebrity spotting. In Bonifacio, most bars close before midnight, but there are nightclubs in the stunning port of Porto-Vecchio which stay open until the early hours.
Shopping in Corsica is a relaxed affair, even its capital. Instead of giant malls, you’ll find a diverse selection of small shops specialising in souvenirs, gifts and local foods in the main tourist centres of Bastia, Porto-Vecchio, Calvi and Bonifacio. Ajaccio is known for its French and Italian designer boutiques, as well as its daily market on Place César-Campinchi, one of the largest fresh produce markets on the island.
Beaches abound in Corsica, and sun worshipers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to lounging shore side. Just south of Bastia lies Plage l'Arinella – a stretch of sandy beach that's perfect for relaxing or, for more active types, getting out on the water. Festivals and events occur year round on Corsica, so it’s always worth checking what’s on when you want to go. September’s Festival du Tango in Bonifacio attracts some of the finest tango dancers and guitarists in the world, with street performers as well as shows in the old citadel. If hiking is your thing you can explore thousands of miles of trails inland, especially around the Aiguilles de Bavella, a spiked, rocky red granite mountain. And don’t miss the Scandolo Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site with atmospheric cliffs and grottos. Or why not take a boat tour around the gorgeous, rugged coastline?
